Nigeria police make arrests over Boko Haram 'sleeper cells' in Abuja area

Abuja: Nigeria's secret police on Saturday said they had arrested a dozen suspects linked to the discovery of "sleeper cells" operated by Boko Haram Islamists in and around the capital Abuja. The Department of State Services said those arrested had travelled from the restive northeast of the country to the Federal Capital Territory and were planning on staging attacks in Abuja during the year-end festivities.

At least three people were killed and six others injured Friday in suicide attacks in Nigeria's northeast Borno state blamed on Boko Haram Islamists, vigilantes told AFP. Two bombers blew themselves up at a security checkpoint outside Sabon Gari village in Biu district, 180 kilometres south of state capital Maiduguri, killing two civilian vigilantes and injuring four people.

The Islamic State's West Africa Province, formerly known as Boko Haram, continues to utilize women as suicide bombers in its rampage through Nigeria and in neighboring countries. At least 75 women and young girls have carried out suicide attacks on behalf of the terrorist organization in northwest Nigeria, northern Cameroon, and southwestern Chad since the beginning of June 2014, according to data compiled by The Long War Journal .

Another pipeline fire, the second in the spate of three weeks, on the fringe of the Army Barracks along the Effurun-Sapele Road, Delta state left several cars burnt and those on transit held in gridlock as vehicular movement between Warri and Sapele was caused by a heavy guard of military personnel yesterday. The raging fire was said to have been ignited at about 10am by a spark from a power electricity cable fell by a heavy duty equipment into a pool of crude oil which observers noticed has been spilling from a ruptured pipeline belonging to the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, in the past three days.
