JOHANNESBURG, Dec 3 MTN Group will lobby for further reductions to a fine imposed by Nigeria, a source familiar with the matter said, after authorities in its biggest market cut the penalty by more than a third on Thursday to $3.4 billion. The Nigerian Communications Commission handed Africa's biggest mobile phone company a $5.2 billion penalty in October after MTN failed to cut off users with unregistered SIM cards from its network.

MTN Group Ltd., Africa's largest phone company, is working to further reduce a record fine imposed by Nigerian authorities even after the penalty was cut by 35 percent to $3.4 billion, according to a person familiar with the matter. The wireless operator is also considering further management changes as it deals with the fallout from the Nigeria dispute, said the person, who asked not to be identified as the matter is private.

The Nigerian Communications Commission has reduced the monumental fine of N1.04 trillion it imposed on the MTN Nigeria, for failure to disconnect 5.2 million unregistered subscribers, to N674 billion. A statement issued by the MTN Group yesterday said NCC decided to reduce the fine to US$3.4 billion after considering a request from the company, saying the company now has December 31, 2015 deadline to pay up the fine.
